Planned Parenthood misappropriates Fannie Lou Hamer for Black History Month

Planned Parenthood, founded by eugenicist Margaret Sanger, tried to use Fannie Lou Hamer during Black History Month:

But Planned Parenthood staff didn’t do their homework, not even a cursory search. Fannie Lou Hamer was forcibly sterilized and was outspoken in her opposition to abortion.

Fannie Lou declared, “I believe that legal abortion is legal murder.”

We know that women of color disproportionately suffer abortions. Instead of addressing the lack of financial and emotional support, they take their precious children and limited funds.

Feminists for Life advocates comprehensive support for mother and child. We promote holistic solutions that women ask for and deserve, including campus and workplace solutions, and whenever possible, the support from the father of the child. That’s how you end the feminization of poverty.

We continue to advocate research and prevention to combat the high rate of maternal mortality, especially among Black women.

So we celebrate the courage and principles demonstrated so powerfully by Fannie Lou Hamer. But more important than schooling Planned Parenthood is our support for the lives of every mother, every child, no matter the excuse for discrimination.

As Planned Parenthood says, but we mean, we won’t stop fighting until everyone—including Black communities—can get the care they need.
