Resources for Working Parents

Today is International Workers’ Day, and as Feminists for Life, we support the rights of pregnant and parenting people in the workplace! Like our feminist foremothers who fought for equal pay, legal protections, and women’s rights in the workplace, we are still fighting these battles today.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the “mother” of the women’s rights movement in the United States, fought for years alongside Susan B. Anthony to secure women’s labor and property rights—all while upholding the dignity of human life from conception.

Building on the foundation these women laid, we have made great strides towards fair working conditions and legal protections with the introduction of laws like the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act (“PUMP Act”).

Our Women Deserve Better helpsite has a wealth of information to help working parents get used to their new life with a baby. Exploring these topics, such as “Setting Up a Nursing Room at Work” and “How to Work with Your Employer for Family-Friendly Solutions,” can help you navigate the situations you may encounter!

Educating yourself on your rights and legal protections is one of the most powerful things you can do when it comes to advocating for yourself and your child—and for helping other moms in the workplace! Read more about the Pregnant Workers’ Fairness Act at this link, and learn more about the PUMP Act here!

Lastly, check out Feminists for Life’s Family Friendly Workplace Evaluation to find out for yourself what improvements could be made at your workplace. Good practice starts with sound policies, and this evaluation is a great place to get started!
